On April 23, more than 300 people gathered to celebrate the State of Maryland’s 91 finalists at the 2016 Letters About Literature Awards Ceremony. Senator Paul Sarbanes and Congressman John Sarbanes joined Phoebe Stein, Executive Director of Maryland Humanities, in presenting certificates to our finalists. Letters About Literature is a reading and writing contest for students in Grades 4-12. Students are asked to read a book, poem, or speech and write to the author (living or dead) about how the book affected them personally. Letters are judged on state and national levels. Tens of thousands of students from across the country enter Letters About Literature each year.

Maddie wrote a beautiful essay/letter to Harper Lee about her book Go Set a Watchman.
