Both were eager share an idea for "captains" practices for their respective sports. They wanted to improve individually of course, but more importantly they wanted their teams to improve more. Katie showed exceptional leadership and reflected the triple impact competitor model (how to make yourself better, how to make your team better, how to make the game better). That made a positive impression on me and Katie has continued to impress me ever since."

US English Teacher Explores Brontë at The Morgan
Upper School English Teacher Erin DeSimone visited The Morgan Library & Museum in New York City as professional development.
Ms. DeSimone said, "It was inspiring to see the mini-story books that Charlotte Brontë wrote and decorated as a child. She trained herself to write in minuscule, but beautifully legible, handwriting; and then, she wrote short stories, using this handwriting, in books no bigger than the size of my palm. Seeing these books, influenced the creation of our Jane Eyre vocabulary study." All of the Grade 9 English teachers used the tic-tac-toe board technique for project options, which we learned during the SR Professional Days, to devise an assignment in which they had a choice of four creative vocabulary projects. In class, the girls wrote two facts about Charlotte Bronte's life in mini-handwriting; they all seemed excited and intrigued!
Ms. DeSimone also used her experience at the exhibit to create a virtual exhibition for her students. She used the presentation to introduce her students to the life of Charlotte Brontë and the life of women in 19th century England.
Teachers of the Year at SR Recognized by High School Principals Association
Congratulations to the 2015-2016 HSPA (High School Principals Association) Teachers of the Year from Stone Ridge:
Veteran Teacher of the Year, Heidi Johnson, Science Teacher
New Teacher of the Year, Cyrus Ishikawa, Math Teacher
Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Ishikawa were honored at the HSPA Professional Development Day on October 28. Congratulations to our outstanding teachers!Mrs. Heidi Johnson
Mrs. Johnson brings the wonder of God’s natural world to her students each day. Her enthusiasm, knowledge of the subject matter, and complete enjoyment of work in the field have made her a stand-out teacher in the science department at Stone Ridge. In her sixth year at the school, she teaches biology, A.P. Environmental Science, and our summer field study class. She is at her best guiding students through complex topics, challenging them with independent research projects, and joining them in her waders in local streams and rivers. A former trainer of marine mammals at the Minnesota Zoo, Mrs. Johnson brings real-world experience and love for wildlife ecology to her students, colleagues, and also acts as a “turtle whisperer” for class mascot, Kijani (turtle in Swahili), each and every day. In addition to her outstanding classroom and field work, she has been dedicated to training our Social Action leaders and actively helping them bring peer leadership and social Catholic teaching to our school community.
Mr. Cyrus Ishikawa
With a mathematician’s precision and the wonder of a philosopher, Mr. Ishikawa dazzles his students and colleagues. New to Stone Ridge, he is a thirty year veteran and award-winning teacher from the Montgomery County public school system. He brings a wealth of experience and creativity to his teaching of upper level mathematics, with an amazing track record of outstanding results on the A.P. Calculus A.B. and A.P. Calculus B.C. exams as well as in guiding students in local and national math competitions. In his short time at Stone Ridge, he has fully embraced the mission of Sacred Heart education and exemplifies all of what our School's order foundress Madeleine Sophie Barat captured in creating her society, “for the sake of one child.” His dedication to excellence combined with his care of each of his students make him a most deserving award winner.

Varsity Swimming & Basketball Make Special Memories in NYC
Stone Ridge Athletics has made huge strides in providing overnight trips to its teams with the purpose of creating truly memorable experiences for our student-athletes. On November 21 and 22, the varsity swimming and basketball teams went to New York City. Jason McGhee, Director of Athletics, said, "This opportunity truly reflects the three goals we hope to meet for all team-related trips in the future: Team Bonding & Team Culture Building; Educational; and Competition! Providing memorable team activities that incorporate these goals truly complements the experience SR Athletics wants to provide all of our student-athletes, and more importantly, it reinforces the commitment Stone Ridge has to providing a truly unique experience for all SR girls."
The team bonding and culture building occurred naturally--eating dinner together and hanging out for a few hours in Times Square certainly emphasized that point. Additionally, the team toured our Sacred Heart sister school, the Convent of the Sacred Heart at 91st Street. During the tour there was even a brief excursion to Central Park which is located adjacent to its academic buildings. As for the educational aspect, there was a visit to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
Finally, both teams rounded out the trip by competing with their Sacred Heart sisters. There was no better way to conclude this visit than spending quality time in a Sacred Heart venue with Sacred Heart educators and students! #goSRgators #SRtogether #GatorStrong

Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebrated at SR
On Monday, December 12, the Upper School Morning Assembly included a presentation in Spanish and English by students in the Spanish IV class. They explained the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe and her significance to the faithful in Mexico and the Americas. They led morning prayer, sang the traditional La Guadalupana, and 60+ students processed with flowers to the image of Our Lady in Hamilton House--a beautiful tribute. Happy Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Happy Birthday St. Madeleine Sophie!

What a success for “Hour of Code” week at SR!
In the Middle School, we did something counter-intuitive during the Hour of Code week--we put away laptops to become teams of coders and robots! The girls used a tinkersmith activity to code using arrows as language. They “programmed” their robots to stack the cups in a specific way. This activity gave meaning to what debugging, coding, programming, and robotics really is.
The Grade 6 science teacher lead an Hour of Code activity using a khanacademy.org activity, Drawing Using Code. What a great example of STEAM learning!
The girls continue to learn to code with online coding tools such as codecombat.com, playcodemonkey.com, lightbot.com, scratch.mit.edu, and so much more.
In the Upper School, the Science classes are integrating coding via the use of Arduino units. Students explore how to use an Arduino and the code that makes it all happen. The History classes are using the topic of art and architecture in the Age of Justinian to give students a practical use for html, css, and javascript. The students in World History I completed research about art or architecture from the Byzantine Empire and the content is placed into an interactive timeline for class review. The First Academic students are using online tools to follow four exercises that scaffold coding knowledge in realtime. Students are guided through the code-writing process with positive feedback, and students often get the 'wow' factor that comes with on-the-fly results.

SR Grade 5 Soccer Living out the Sacred Heart Goals
Our Stone Ridge Grade 5 soccer team closed out the season by hosting the Washington School for Girls on Gator Field for a fun evening of competition. If you were one of the lucky ones to witness the game, you would agree that the game was meant to happen! Our team, coach (Kevin Lange), and the Athletic Department wanted the game to offer a powerful showing of Goal III, "A Social Awareness Which Impels to Action," Goal IV, "The Building of Community as a Christian Value," and finally, Goal V, "Personal Growth in an Atmosphere of Wise Freedom."
The team celebrated new friendships with WSG by enjoying a pizza party immediately following the game. While competing was a nice byproduct of the day, the overwhelming positive feelings, energy, and excitement were obvious, and the day created a wonderful memory for all involved. Congratulations to Grade 5 soccer for a successful end to a terrific season! #goSRgators #SRtogether #GatorStrong
