Emma Cowan's, Upper School art teacher, Multi-dimensional Art class is making good use of the summer. Over the past few weeks, the students have looked at post-impressionism and the modern art movements. The students choose their favorite post-impressionists, such as Van Gogh and Seurat, and painted and tried out block printing. They studied the Japanese influence on the late 19th, early 20th century European art. They have also visited the Paul Mellon exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. A great number of Paul Mellon's gifts to the museum are works of art on paper, which, because of their sensitivity to light, cannot be constantly displayed. The students have been studying these early modern artists and enjoyed viewing some of the finest pastels, watercolors, drawings, prints, and illustrated books given to the Gallery.
